UK promotion BAMMA’s seventh event has suffered a blow after an injury to headliner and current middleweight champion Tom ‘Kong’ Watson forced him out of his title defence against former UFC fighter Frank Trigg.
‘Kong’, who looked to be in top form at BAMMA 6 when he demolished Murilo ‘Ninja’ Rua in less than three rounds is believed to have injured his back in training and won’t heal in time to take part in the show.
The promotion have moved swiftly to find a replacement for the September 10th event however and recent Bellator welterweight tournament participant ‘Judo’ Jim Wallhead will now take his place.
Wallhead, himself a UK fighter, has an impressive 21-6 record and will still provide a decent test for Trigg who marked his BAMMA debut in May with a TKO win over John Phillips.
In other BAMMA news it’s been revealed that hopes of putting together a major fight between new signing Nate Marquardt and Paul Daley have fallen through for now. Issues regarding Daley’s current deal with Strikeforce which gives them the right to refuse any fight the UK fighter is offered outside of the promotion are believed to be the main problem.
