Former UFC fighter Nate Marquardt finally has his first assignment for UK promotion BAMMA who he signed an exclusive deal with earlier this year.
Marquardt will meet another former UFC fighter Yoshiyuki Yoshida in the main event of BAMMA 9 which takes place on February 11th.
BAMMA’s biggest signing to date had originally been expected to headline their 8th event in December, but for reasons that so far haven’t been disclosed his debut has now been shifted back to next year, meaning that it will have been almost a year since his last fight by the time he steps into the cage in London, England for the show which will air live on SyFy in the UK.
Yoshida is a 37 year-old veteran hailing from Japan who is best known to MMA fans for his two year stint in the UFC between 2008-2010 where he went 2-3 before being released.
After that he headed to Bellator where he unexpectedly fell victim to a one-sided beating at the hands of the up and coming Chris Lozano which left questions regarding his future in the sport.
He has since bounced back however after almost a year out, picking up wins over Ferrid Kheder and Phil Baroni so far in 2011.
Given the fact that BAMMA have a limited welterweight pool to choose from this is a respectable match-up for Marquardt’s first fight at 170lbs, though it’s unquestionably a step down from the caliber of opposition that he was facing in the UFC before being cut after a pre-fight medical revealed he had elevated levels of testosterone.
