BAMMA 5 took a while to warm up this evening, but Paul Daley ensured that the fans would go home with a smile on their faces after demolishing DEEP champion Yuya Shirai in the main event.
The writing looked on the wall for the Japanese fighter early as he was floored with a piston-like jab from Daley in the opening minute of the bout.
It wasn’t long before he was again hurt by another powerful jab as Daley smelled blood and came forward more aggressively.
Then came the finishing salvo – a crushing uppercut followed up by a lightning-fast left hook which crumpled Shirai to the canvas. Daley followed up with a few hammer-fists before the referee called an end to the fight with just 1.46mins on the clock.
Unforunately for Daley he won’t claim the BAMMA Welterweight Championship belt after failing to make weight yesterday, but this win does ensure that he’s now clear to fight Nick Diaz for the Strikeforce belt, which could potentially happen in April in the U.S.
Earlier in the evening Ricco Rodriguez overcame an early scare when he was knocked down by a clipping blow from James McSweeney, to win by unanimous decision.
It wasn’t a stellar performance by Rodriguez, but he wisely steered clear of standing toe-to-toe with the Brit for most of the bout, and instead took to the mat where he comfortably outworked his opponent from top control.
