UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs following his five round title fight with middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 on August 7th.
Sherdog.com who first reported the news spoke to the California State Athletic Commission and were able to confirm that Sonnen, “received his notice yesterday.”
Sonnen had been hailed as a hero after the fight for a stand-out performance which saw him dominate Silva, who had at the time been unbeaten in his 11 UFC fight career, for four and a half rounds before succumbing to a submission with under two minutes left of the fight.
The UFC recently announced that Sonnen’s performance had earned him an immediate rematch with the champion which was expected to take place in early 2011.
Now that fight is in jeopardy with Sonnen potentially a lengthy suspension for failing the post-fight drugs test.
So far neither Sonnen nor the UFC has spoken out about this breaking story, but Ed Soares, manger of Anderson Silva has relayed his disappointment at the news.
“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him,” Soares told Sherdog.com. “I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished.
