With March madness almost over it’s time to look forward to what’s happening in April, and the good news is that it’s another month that’s stacked full of huge MMA events for most of the sport’s major promotions.
The action gets underway on Thursday, April 8th when Bellator begin their eagerly anticipated second season. The featherweight and lightweight tournaments get underway on the night with the debut of former UFC fighter Roger Huerta against 6-0 Chad Hinton sure to be a major talking point.
Bellator’s weekly format guarantees that you’ll not be short of MMA action for some time to come, so be sure to look out for their additional April events on the 15th, 22nd and 29th of the month.
On April 10th, just two days after Bellator’s season opener, the UFC will be broadcasting an historic open-air event in Abu Dhabi for UFC 112.
The event features two title fights, as Anderson Silva defends his middleweight title against Demian Maia, while BJ Penn defends his lightweight belt against Frankie Edgar. With Matt Hughes welcoming Renzo Gracie for his octagon debut on the same card this is definitely one not to be missed.
Moving onwards, the 17th of April sees Strikeforce heading to Nashville for the promotions second event to air live on CBS, and going all-out with three title belts up for grabs.
The card is headlined by former UFC star Dan Henderson in his promotional debut as he fights Jake Shields for the middleweight title. Meanwhile Gegard Mousasi looks to defend his light-heavyweight strap against Muhhamed ‘King Mo’ Lawal, and Gilbert Melendez welcomes controversial Japanese star Shinya Aoki to U.S soil with the lightweight title on the line.
A rumor that the UFC were also planning to hold an event on the same date to counter-program Strikeforce has since been proven to be false.
The next again Saturday marks a major milestone in the WEC’s history as they launch their first ever Pay-Per-View event for WEC 48.
To help ensure the success of the show the promotion have stacked the card with exciting fights, including the biggest fight possible in the WEC at this time between rising star and current featherweight champion Jose Aldo and the ultra-popular former champion Urijah Faber. With a lightweight title rematch between Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone, who’s first encounter proved to be the fight of the year, also scheduled this is one not to be missed.
DREAM had also been planning an event in Korea for the 24th, but with several stars not available to fight the promotion has been forced to cancel the event.
That just about does it for May, another great month for MMA fans I’m sure you’ll agree. If that’s not enough mixed martial arts action for you though then don’t forget that The Ultimate Fighter Season 11 will also be airing weekly during this month.
