As we approach the first weekend in August it’s high time we put together a list of the major MMA events you can look forward to throughout the course of the month.  Really it’s all about the UFC this month, with the sport’s largest promotion delivering three major events during August, though there are a few other shows to take note of as well.

Saturday 6th August: UFC 133: Evans Vs Ortiz 2

First up is this weekend’s UFC 133 event which features a revised main event with Rashad Evans attempting to secure the next shot at the light-heavyweight title when he enters into a rematch with Tito Ortiz who’s currently enjoying a revival of fortunes after a shock win over Ryan Bader just a month ago.

Elsewhere the UFC 133 card has been injury cursed which has weakened the line-up, with Vitor Belfort Vs Yoshihiro Akiyama now serving as the co-main event with in truth a less than stellar supporting cast beneath them.  having said that it’s always worth remembering that sometimes the less exciting line-ups end up producing the best fights.

Friday 12th August: Strikeforce Challengers 18

The Strikeforce Challengers series continues on in it’s new home base of Las Vegas the following weekend with promotional veteran Jorge Gurgel headlining against the 9-2 Joe Duarte.

Also on the bill is a potential new rising star of woman’s MMA Ronda Rousey who’ll face another newcomer Sarah D’Alelio who was originally slated as an opponent for Gina Carano, while Gian Villante Vs Keith Berry and Pat Healy vs Eric Wisely are amongst the other notable bouts on show.

Saturday 13th August: MMA Fight Pit: Genesis

If you’re looking for a little detour from the more well known promotions in August then how about the debut of ‘MMA Fight Pit’ coming out of New Mexico.  For their first card they’ve stuck with the tried and tested method of using a string of Zuffa veterans with Jens Pulver in the starring role taking on former WEC fighter Coty Wheeler.

Other familar faces on the card include ex-UFC fighters Houston Alexander and Razak Al-Hassan fighting in the co-main event while former Ultimate Fighter mischief-makers Junie Browning and Jamie Yager are also on-board.

Sunday 14th August – UFC On Versus 5: Hardy Vs Lytle

The weekend’s action is rounded off by the UFC’s fifth live show on the Versus network with welterweight contenders Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle taking the main event honors on this occasion.

This is actually a fun card all-around with the co-main event being particularly worthy, featuring top lightweight contenders Jim Miller and Ben Henderson while another 155lb cracker sees Donald Cerrone Vs Charles Oliveira in a potential ‘Fight Of The Night’ match-up.

20th August: Bellator 48

Bellator have the following weekend pretty much all to themselves for their 48th show which will air live on MTV2.  The heavyweight’s will play a significant role here, with current champion Cole Konrad set to take on UFC vet Paul Buentello, while another two former UFC fighters Ricco Rodriguez and Seth Petruzelli will also feature.

In amongst the big guys will be the featherweight tournament final which pits Pat Curran against Marlon Sandro.

Saturday 27th August: UFC 134: Rio

August saves the best until last with the final weekend of the month featuring the UFC’s long awaited return to Brazil for UFC 134 in Rio.  That gives Pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva the chance to defend his title in front of his home fans when he takes on Yushin Okami who finally gets his shot at the belt after a 10-2 run in the UFC.

Brazilian fighters dominate the card, with intriguing match-ups featuring the likes of Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in a rematch with Forrest Griffin, while Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira finally returns to square up with fast rising heavyweight fighter Brendan Schaub who’s currently four fights unbeaten.
