December 2011 plays host to a number of big events from most of the major MMA promoters, with only Bellator missing from the line-up, and that means that with the exception of Christmas weekend there’s going to be must-see fights on every week.
Saturday, 3rd December: The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale
The action gets underway this weekend with the TUF 14 finale in las Vegas which will be headlined by the season’s coaches Michael Bisping and Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller.
Much of the rest of the card is under wraps until tonight’s finale show on Spike TV airs, but rest assured it will feature a collection of fighters from the latest season, and of course the final which will decide who becomes the next ‘Ultimate Fighter’.
Saturday, 10th December: BAMMA 8
The following weekend begins with UK promotion BAMMA with their eight event which will air for the first time live on both SyFy in the UK and HDNet in the US.
Main event honors here goes to recent UFC light-heavyweight target Jimi Manuwa Vs Anthony Rea, while Joey Villasenor Vs Jim Wallhead serves as the co-main event.
Saturday 10th December: UFC 140: Jones Vs Machida
Following on from the BAMMA card there’s a major UFC event to look forward to with light-heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones looking to defend his title against former champ Lyoto Machida at UFC 140 in Canada.
The Nogueira brothers are also on-board, with Big Nog set to take on Frank Mir while Lil Nog goes up against Tito Ortiz.
17th December: Strikeforce: Melendez Vs Masvidal
It’s been quiet on the Strikeforce front lately, but they still have one big event up their sleeve to round-out 2011 with an exciting lightweight title fight between current champion Gilbert Melendez and Jorge Masvidal topping the bill.
Also look out for the long-awaited return of woman’s 145lb title holder Cris ‘Cyborg ‘Santos against Hiroko Yamanaka, and a strong supporting cast including Gegard Mousasi and KJ Noons.
Friday, 30th December: UFC 141: Lesnar Vs Overeem
Due to the festive season the UFC’s final event of the year will move to a Friday night, and you’ll want to make sure you don’t forget that as Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem will be throwing down in a must-see heavyweight showdown to decide the next No.1 contender in the division.
After spending much of the year on the treatment table Jon Fitch will also be back to attempt to forge a new path to the 170lb title against Johny Hendricks.
Sunday, 31st December: DREAM: How Are You! New Year! 2011
Then it’s over to Japan for the final MMA event of 2011, and though it won’t be the traditional ‘Dynamite!!!’ event, DREAM are still putting on a show, bizarrely titled ‘How Are You! New Year! 2011’.
Heavyweight superstar Fedor Emelianenko is believed to be in talks to fight on the show, while there’ll also be a featherweight title fight between Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Takeshi Inoue, bantamweight semi-final tournament action featuring the likes of Antonio Banuelos and Bibiyano Fernandes, plus Shinya Aoki Vs Satoru Kitaoka.
