The month of May is almost upon us, and we’re pleased to say there’s plenty of major MMA events for your to look forward to, plus a couple of smaller shows offering up some interesting alternatives if your still hungry for more.
Naturally Bellator’s second season continues on a weekly basis throughout May, with Bellator 17 set for the 6th of May, with further shows scheduled for the 13th and 20th.
Bellator 17 ini particular is definitely shaping up nicely with last years lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez returning for a ‘superfight’ against former UFC fighter Josh Neer. Also on the card is the continuation of this years LW tourney as the semi-finals get underway with the favourite Roger Huerta set to face Pat Curran while Toby Imada fights Carey Vanier.
On May 8th the UFC is in it’s second home, Canada for UFC 113 which features the long-awaited light-heavyweight championship rematch between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua.
The event also features a welterweight showdown between Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley, with rumors of a potential spot on TUF 12 as a coach, and even a possible title fight with GSP on the line for the winner. Kimbo Slice also returns to the octagon for his PPV debut against fellow TUF 10 competitor Matt Mitrione.

Moving on to the following weekend, May 15th sees Strikeforce rolling into Missouri with their ‘Heavy Artillery’ event which lives up to it’s name with a number of notable heavyweight match-ups.
Current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem finally makes his return to the promotion, and takes top billing in a title defense against Brett Rogers. Another HW bout between new signing Andrei Alrovski and Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva serves as the co-main event, while other worthy match-ups include ‘Jacare’ Souza Vs Joey Villasenor, Roger Gracie Vs Kevin Randleman and Antwain Britt Vs Rafael ‘Feijao’ Cavalcante.

While it’s likely that most MMA fans will be tuning in to see the Strikeforce event it’s also worth mentioning that Shine Fights also have an interesting night of fights on May 15th titled ‘World’s Collide’.
The show’s main attraction is a grudge match between former UFC fighter Din Thomas, and former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga. A rowdy press-conference between the two has already added some spice to this intriguing MMA vs Boxing encounter, and is backed up by additional fights featuring familiar fighters like Murilo ‘Ninja’ Rua, Nick Thompson, Brauilo Estima and Junior Assuncao.
Just six days later on May 21st Strikeforce once again goes head-to-head with a smaller promotion as their ‘Challengers 8’ event is headlined by the veteran Matt Lindland Vs Kevin Casey, while Moosin MMA put on a show that’s creating a buzz due to it featuring a headline feature between ‘World’s Strongest Man’ winner Mariusz Pudzianowski and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia.
The Moosin event also gives Strikeforce a run for their money by putting on additional bouts featuring three recognized veteran fighters – Travis Wiuff, Travis Lutter and Yves Edwards, while Strikeforce have Tyron Woodley in tow, but will have to do without Kerry Vera who has pulled out due to injury.
The UFC put on their second big show of the month on the 29th when TUF 10 coaches Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Rashad Evans finally get into the octagon at UFC 114.
The headline bout alone will likely shift considerable PPV numbers, but the rest of the card is stacked nonetheless. The co-main event also sees an interesting match-up as Forrest Griffin take on another tough Brazilian, Antonio ‘Rogerio’ Nogueira.
With Michael Bisping Vs Dan Miller, Todd Duffee Vs Mike Russow and Diego Sanchez return to 170lbs against John Hathaway also slated for the main card, while the likes of Luis Cane, Amir Sadollah, Efrain Escudero and Melvin Guillard fight in the prelims, this is an event not to be missed.

Rounding off another busy month of MMA action is DREAM 14 in the wee hours of Sunday, 30th May. Unfortunately the card has just suffered a blow after it was confirmed that the proposed light-heavyweight tournament has been scrapped.
What we do know that Strikeforce bad boy and welterweight champion Nick Diaz will feature in a cross-promotional encounter against Japanese legend Mach Sakurai. Joachim Hansen is also scheduled to appear against Hiroyuki Takaya, and the event will be spiced up by the return of the DREAM white cage.
