The first few weeks in May are fairly quiet in the mixed martial arts world, giving the perfect opportunity for a slight breather before things pick up again towards the end of the month, and then go into overdrive in June.

Saturday 7th May – Bellator 43: Heiron Vs Hawn

Bellator’s fourth season draws to a close this month, and that means we’ve got a number of tournament finals to look forward to, starting with the welterweight final between Jay Heiron and Rick Hawn on May 7th.

Heiron isn’t the only former Strikeforce fighter on the card though, with Joe ‘Diesel’ Riggs also making an appearance on the main card against Bryan Baker.

Saturday May 14th – Bellator 44: Freire Vs Chandler

A week on and Bellator are again the most notable show in town as their lightweight tournament comes to a conclusion with Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire and Michael Chandler vying for the top spot.

Also look out for a superfight between dominant Bellator champ Hector Lombard and Falinko Valente on the card which as always airs live on MTV2.

Saturday 21st May – BAMMA 6: Ninja Vs Kong

The following weekend brings a little variety in the shape of British promotion BAMMA’s 6th event which airs live on the SyFy channel in the UK.

Headlining the show is a middleweight title featuring current BAMMA champion Tom ‘Kong’ Watson‘ against UFC star ‘Shogun’s’ brother Murlio ‘Ninja’ Rua, while Frank Trigg also competes against UK fighter John Phillips.

Saturday 21st May – Bellator 45: Season Finale

Bellator are also back on the same night with their final show of season 4 which features two tournament deciders.

On headline duties is the light-heavyweight tournament final between Richard Hale and Christian M’Pumbu, while Patricio Freire and Daniel Straus will also be competing in the bantamweight final.

Friday 27th May – Titan FC 18

The Up and coming Titan FC promotion return on 27th May with a few familiar faces for their latest outing on HDNet which kicks off a busy weekend of MMA action.

Former UFC and WEC star Jens Pulver will continue his quest to prove he’s legit when he takes on Mike Powell, while another former UFC fighter Drew McFeddries will also feature against Daryll Cobb.

Saturday 28th May – UFC 130: Edgar Vs Maynard 2

May’s biggest event takes place on 28th May in Las Vegas as Frankie Edgar looks to defend his lightweight title for a second time against Gray Maynard, with everyone hoping that a) this will be as entertaining as their first encounter at the turn of the year, and b) that there’ll be a definitive winner this time around.

There’s quality right the way through this card, with Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson Vs Matt Hamill lined up for the co-main event, while a notable heavyweight clash between Frank Mir and Roy Nelson is amongst a number of other must-see fights on the card.

Sunday 29th May – DREAM 17: Fight For Japan

The final major event of May sees the return of Japanese promotion DREAM with their first event of the year.

The focus of this show will be an all Japanese bantamweight grand-prix, with homegrown talent such as Yoshiro Maeda and Hideo Tokoro participating, while there’s also room for individual bouts featuring the likes of Shinya Aoki and Joachim Hansen elsewhere on the card.
