October has now been renamed ‘Brocktober’ in MMA circles with the UFC heavyweight champion’s next title defense at UFC 121 being the major focal point of another busy month of fights.
2nd October: K-1 Grand-Prix 2010 (Quarter-Finals)
Our rundown of the major events of the month doesn’t actually start with an MMA show though. Instead we’ve got some must see K-1 action to kick things off in a big way.
The quarter-finals of this year’s Grand-Prix features current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, while Andrei Arlovski is a surprise inclusion alongside K-1 veterans like Semmy Schilt, Peter Aerts and Jerome Le Banner.
9th October 2010: Strikeforce: Diaz Vs Noons 2
The first big MMA action of the month takes place on Saturday 9th, when a rematch three years in the making between welterweight champion Nick Diaz and KJ Noons headlines Strikeforce’s latest event on Showtime.
There’s another title on the line at the event as well as woman’s 135lb champion Sarah Kaufman takes on Holland’s Marloes Coenen.
16th October: UFC 120: Bisping Vs Akiyama
A week later we head across the pond for the UFC’s first visit to the UK this year with Michael Bisping Vs Yoshihiro Akiyama on headline duties.
US viewers will be pleased to know that this event will air for free on Spike TV, where they’ll be able to check out a host of other UK fighters including former 170lb No.1 contender Dan Hardy who will face the tenacious Carlos Condit in what promises to be an exciting co-main event scrap.
21st October: Bellator 33 – Alvarez Vs Huerta
There’s Bellator action all month long, but the jewel in their crown in October is Bellator 33 on the 21st of the month which sees dominant lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez battling former UFC fighter Roger Huerta.
Alongside that the event also features a welterweight championship match-up as Lyman Good prepares to defend his belt against season 2 winner Ben Askren.
22nd October: Strikeforce Challengers 11
A busy week of MMA action continues on Friday 22nd when Strikeforce Challengers 11 arrives in Fresno, California.
In the spotlight in this edition is a rematch between Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker with Billy Evangelista Vs Waachim Spiritwolf also on the bill.
23rd October: UFC 121: Lesnar Vs Velasquez
And so, just a week after UFC 120 we arrive at the centerpiece of ‘Brocktober’ as heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar battles Cain Velasquez in a blockbuster title fight at UFC 121 on the 23rd.
The UFC haven’t skimped on the other fights on the card either with former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields making his debut against Martin Kampmann, while Diego Sanchez Vs Paulo Thiago, Tito Ortiz Vs Matt Hamill and Brendan Schaub Vs Gabriel Gonzaga complete a stacked main card.
