Major MMA Events In September 2012

With UFC 151 canceled, the first couple of weeks in September are pretty quiet on the MMA front, but thankfully it starts to pick up again around the middle of the month so you’ll still get your fight fix!

Saturday, 1st September: UFC 151

If all had gone according to plan UFC 151 would have taken place this weekend with light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Dan Henderson fighting in the main event, but alas with ‘Hendo’ pulling out injured and Jones turning down a last-minute fight with Chael Sonnen the event had to be scrapped.

Friday, 14th September: The Ultimate Fighter Season 16 Premiere

After a couple of quiet weeks, the season premiere of TUF 16 on FX arrives to wake you from your slumber with 32 new welterweight fighters vying for a UFC contract.

They’ll be coached by heavyweight stars Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson and the opening episode features the opening elimination round of fights to see who makes it into the house.

Saturday, 15th September: BAMMA 10

UK promotion BAMMA are back in business after an extended break the following evening sporting a new UK TV deal which will see the event aired live on 5*, with the highlights later being shown on Channel 5.

Fronting the show is former TUF finalist Andre Winner who goes up against Rob Sinclair for the lightweight title, while Jack Marshman and Andrew Punshon got to battle for the middleweight strap.

Saturday, 22nd September: UFC 152: Jones Vs Belfort

The upside to UFC 151 being canceled is that it makes UFC 152 just a few weeks later even stronger with a newly arranged light-heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Vitor Belfort now headlining the event.

That means the original main event, the inaugural flyweight title decider between Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez switching to co-main event status, with Michael Bisping Vs Brian Stann being another big fight to look forward to on the night.

Friday, 28th September: Bellator 74: Season 7 Premiere

Towards the end of the month Bellator returns with the start of it’s seventh season – the final one before they makes there much talked about move to Spike TV in 2013.

Former champion Lyman Good and Jim Wallhead front the show in the quarter-finals of Bellator’s next welterweight tournament, with the other three bouts also featuring on the main card.

Saturday, 29th September: UFC On Fuel TV 5: Struve Vs Miocic

A rare double-header rounds off the month, with the UFC going first with an event in the UK during the day (US time), and finishing in the evening with Strikeforce next show.

‘UFC On Fuel TV 6’ is headlined by a heavyweight clash between Stefan Struve and Stipe Miocic, while Dan Hardy faces Amir Sadollah in the co-main event.

Saturday, 29th September: Strikeforce: Melendez Vs Healy

That same evening Strikeforce takes over on Showtime with a lightweight title fight between Gilbert Melendez and Pat Healy topping the bill.

Josh Thomson Vs Caros Fodor is also worth looking out for, while the likes of Mike Kyle, Jorge Santiago and Amanda Nunes also feature on the card.
