Tonight’s ‘Diaz Vs Cyborg’ event turned out to be another home-run for the Strikeforce promotion, providing plenty of drama, excitement, and with all four main card fights ending inside the distance there’s no doubt this was a fan-pleasing event.
It’s the perfect start to the year for the company and continues the momentum they gained with a spectacular end of year show in December that featured three jaw-dropping KO victories in a row.
Things could scarcely have worked out better for Scott Coker and Co who will now hope to ride this wave of goodwill and good fortune into what should prove to be their biggest undertaking yet – the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand-Prix which commences in just two weeks time with their biggest star Fedor Emelianenko headlining the show.
With the grand-prix set to continue throughout much of the year Strikeforce should be able to keep their existing fans happy, while hopefully drawing in new one’s as well in the coming months.
The hope will be that if they can start to steadily increase the number of viewers they are averaging on the Showtime as 2011 progresses, it may help open the door again to holding certain live events on CBS again, and potentially pay-per-view as well.
The reality is they are still a long way behind the UFC in terms of size, scale and popularity, but on nights like tonight they can give them a run for their money in terms of entertainment, and with the WEC now out of the running they are proving themselves to be well worth their place as the sports second biggest promotion.
