Fight Report

Sam Stout defeats Yves Edwards by KO at 3.52mins of Rd1

This fight was looking relatively even in the first round until Stout landed a picture perfect left hook that caught Edwards flush on the chin and felled him like a tree to the canvas. Edwards was clearly KO’d from the moment the punch landed and Stout did the right thing by not following up on it. Expect to be seeing this one on UFC highlight reels for some time to come, it was that good.

Chris Weidman defeats Jesse Bongfeldt by submission (standing guillotine choke) at 4.54mins of Rd1

– Weidman took a hard kick in the early stages of this fight, and that was his cue to utilize his stand-out wrestling ability, quickly taking Bonfeldt to the mat. From there was he was in complete control of his opponent for much of the round. In the closing stages Bongfeldt got back to his feet, but quickly found himself being locked in a tight standing guillotine choke that left him with no choice but to tap with just seconds remaining.

Krzystof Soszynksi defeats Mike Massenzio by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 30-26)

– Massenzio did well to survive to the final bell after taking this fight on just six days notice at a weight class above his usual one, but this was mostly one-way traffic as Soszynski beat him up in stand-up and on the ground.

Nick Ring defeats James Head by submission (rear-naked choke) at 3.33mins of Rd3

– Nick Ring survived a scare in the first round when he was rocked by a punch to the temple to put on a dominant performance against James Head. Grappling was the key to victory for the former TUF 12 competitor, scoring repeated takedowns, and taking a lot of the wind out of Head’s sails after a repeated elbows from top control left a deep cut on his nose. By the third Head had little left in the tank and after Ring roughed him up more on the mat he finally seized a rear-naked choke and his opponent quickly tapped.

Dustin Poirier defeats Jason Young by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28)

– This was a good advert for the lighter weight classes with Poirier and Young putting on a fast paced, technical battle that confirmed them as two up and coming fighters to keep an eye on for the future. Poirier started fast and furious, and perhaps a little reckless, but settled down as the fight went on and after finding Young to be a tougher than expected propostion in the striking department he utilized his wrestling in the third to ensure the victory. Overall this was a much closer fight than the scorecards might suggest and Young can be proud of his performance.

Joey Beltran defeats Aaron Rosa by TKO at 1.26mins of Rd3

– Not the most technical fight, but still an entertaining slug-fest. Beltran was the aggressor for much of the bout, instigating a brawl that Rosa appeared to happy to oblige in. That led to bombs frequently being exchanged against the cage, and more often than not it was Beltran who was coming out on top. By the third round the punishment was beginning to take it’s toll on the bloodied Rosa, and after being taken down and ground and pounded upon by Beltran the referee was forced to bring an end to the fight.

Darren Elkins defeats Michihiro Omigawa by unanimous decision (29-28 x2, 30-27)

– Baffling judges decision here. Omigawa dictated what turned out to be almost entirely a boxing match for all three rounds, leaving Elkins face bloodied, but somehow the Japanese fighter ended up losing the decision and remains without a win in the UFC.
