There’s only two more events left in the WEC before the promotion packs up it’s bags and moves in with the UFC, and the first comes tomorrow night with WEC 52: Faber Vs Mizugaki in Las Vegas.
Check out our predictions for the fights below and stay tuned tomorrow for all the results as they happen from the show.
Urijah Faber vs. Takeya Mizugaki
This fight marks Faber’s bantamweight debut and I think the lighter weight could work to his advantage as he’s always been on the small side for featherweight.
Mizugaki will be a solid test for him, but I think his superior wrestling will be key here, and while Mizugaki is a good technical boxer I don’t see Faber being out of his depth their either as he puts together a well rounded performance to win on the judges scorecards.
Prediction: Urijah Faber to win by decision
Chad Mendes vs. Javier Vazquez
Despite a lot of hype, so far Mendes hasn’t been able to bring the kind of excitement we’re used to seeing from his team-mate Urijah Faber. He has however shown himself to be a robust fighter who can rely on his wrestling to get him through.
Velasquez will provide his sternest test yet on the ground with his dangerous submissions, but I see Mendes playing it safe and smothering him to grind out another workman-like decision win.
Prediction: Chad Mendes to win by decision.
Joseph Benavidez vs. Wagnney Fabiano
Benavidez may have fallen just short of getting his hands on the bantamweight title thanks to his nemesis Dominick Cruz, but he remains an absolute handful for everyone else in the division.
Fabiano’s BJJ prowess is his major worry here, but meanwhile Benavidez relentless pace, toughness, solid striking and dominant wrestling is going to give the Brazilian problems all fight long.
Prediction: Joseph Benavidez to win by decision.
Erik Koch vs. Francisco Rivera
With Josh Gripsi promoted to a title clash with Jose Aldo at UFC 125, Erik Koch needed a new opponent. In steps Rivera who’s not only making his debut, but is also fighting on short notice. Talk about getting thrown in at the deep end!
I think Koch will take advantage of the first night nerves Rivera is likely to be experiencing and take him to the mat and secure another submission victory.
Prediction: Erik Koch to win by submission in Rd1
Demetrious Johnson vs. Damacio Page
Page has been out injured for over a year which could have a detrimental effect on his perfomance, but Johnson is stepping in at short notice which somewhat evens the scales.
Johnson’s a little small for 135lbs and I think Page will take advantage of that fact. I expect him to get the upper-hand in the wrestling and he’s got the big punching power to give him problems in the stand-up as well. If he can avoid getting caught in a submission I see him finishing this one inside the distance.
Prediction: Damacio Page by TKO in Rd2.
