Martin Kampmann and Thiago Alves delivered a captivating main event at UFC On FX 2 last night, but what comes next for both men after ‘The Hitman’s’ victory?

Martin Kampmann:

Kampmann didn’t look particularly great out there last night, but his fight ending submission was very well executed and he’s now got two big wins under his belt in a row having also defeated Rick Story in November of last year.

His record has been dented by two losses prior to that, but he didn’t lose too much ground there since against he took both Diego Sanchez and Jake Shields to razor thin decisions and arguably should have won at least one if not both.

Therefore Kampmann is very much in the mix at 170lbs and will rightly be looking for a big fight next time out. With that in mind I think the answer could be to pair him up with Jake Ellenberger who’s currently in limbo since Carlos Condit wants to wait for GSP to heal so he can fight him for the title.

Thiago Alves

The result of last night’s fight was certainly a disappointment for Alves, but as a whole his performance was actually good, getting the better of Kampmann for much of the three rounds, and despite the unfortunate ending he actually did show very good takedown defense and improved grappling earlier in the bout.

His recent record is now an ugly 2-4, but I don’t feel he should slip too far down the welterweight ladder as a result of this defeat.

As for what comes next, if Diego Sanchez sticks around at 170lbs then I think that would be a great match-up and would help get one of these guys back on track after their recent losses.
