Tonight’s victory over Paul Daley was a brilliant showcase of Nick Diaz pinpoint accurate striking and cast-iron jaw, and leaves little doubt that he’s one of the biggest stars, and arguably the most entertaining fighter, on the Strikeforce roster.
So, with his star continuing to rise, what comes next for the welterweight champ?
In an ideal world this result would set him up for a crossover fight in the UFC with the winner of GSP Vs Jake Shields, but sadly there’s no indication that Zuffa are ready to go down that route just yet.
Unfortunately that leaves Diaz with few challenges left in Strikeforce’s 170lb division. Strikeforce Challengers product Tyron Woodley (8-0) could one day fufill that role, but he’s not yet ready for an opponent like Diaz and needs more time to develop.
Therefore the logical option seems to be for Strikeforce to once again try to put on a catchweight fight between Diaz and his bitter rival Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller.
There’s certainly plenty of momentum behind the fight, with the two originally clashing during an in-cage brawl last year and having continued to publically exchange insults back and forth ever since, so if it can be put together then it looks like being a guaranteed blockbuster.
So far Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has been unable to get the two fighters to sign on the dotted line though, with money and the exact weight that the fight would be taken being one of the major stumbling blocks, but with the Zuffa now pulling the strings behind the scenes the hope is that an agreement can now finally be reached.
