Impact FC 2: Fight Card

Eight days after their first ever event Impact Fighting Championships are set to unleash their second event, this time on pay-per-view, headlined by old-school UFC vets Ken Shamrock and Pedro Rizzo.

Both men are past their sell-by dates with Shamrock now 46 years old, has won just once in the past six fights, and last year tested positive for steroids after fighting at an event he was co-promoting.

Rizzo is no spring chicken himself at 36.  He’s shown that’s he’s still got enough left in the tank to dispose of other ageing veterans, record recent wins over Jeff Monson and Gary Goodridge, but it’s hard to forget the brutal knockout Gilbert Yvel handed to him at an Ultimate Chaos event back in June of last year.

Thankfully it’s not all OAP’s that are fighting on the card.  Controversial ex-UFC star Paul Daley features in the co-main event in his first fight back after being fired from the sports leading promotion for sucker-punching Josh Koscheck after the bell.  This time he faces a fairly solid opponent in Daniel Acacio who’s record stands at 21-9.

Another potentially interesting encounter sees often troubled fighter Paulo Filho being given a chance to show he’s still got what it takes against Denis Kang who was recently released from the UFC.

Elsewhere Shogun’s brother Maurilo ‘Ninja’ Rua will square off with former TUF reject Jeremy May.   Speaking of TUF fighters, season seven’s Jesse Taylor will compete against yet another UFC veteran, Murilo Bustamante who comes out of a two and a half year retirement to take this fight.

Bob Sapp was also scheduled to fight, but he’s been replaced at short notice by ex-UFC fighter Brad Morris (10-4) who will now fight Sao Palelei (10-2)

Overall the card is a mixed bag, but for an upstart promotion holding their second event in a month down under it could be a lot worse.  Considering the dearth of MMA action for the remainder of July it’s certainly one that’s worth keeping an eye on.
