Tomorrow night’s Strikeforce Challengers 10 event offers a versatile fight card featuring a blend of youth, experience, and even a one night, four woman tournament.
Headlining the card is Joe ‘Diesel’ Riggs who seems to have been around forever, yet is still only 27 years-old. After a loss to Jay Heiron in the undercard of Strikeforce; Miami at the start of the year he will be looking for his 33rd career win against a far less experienced opponent in Louis Taylor who brings a 6-1 record into the cage for his toughest fight to date.
Meanwhile the son of UFC legend Randy, Ryan Couture will make his professional debut on the Showtime broadcast against Lucas Stark, who’s put together a 2-4 record in his young career fighting for the ‘Rage In The Cage’ promotion.
Arguably the most intriguing action of the night however will take place in the woman’s 135lb tournament featuring fan favorite Meisha Tate (9-2), the highly regarded Carina Damm (15-3), experienced Japanese fighter Hitomi Akano (15-7), and Finnish prospect Maiju Kujala (4-1).
The fights for this bout will be determined via a random draw at tonight’s weigh-ins. The tournament also features some curious rules, with the opening bouts being only two rounds long and lasting three minutes. The final will feature three, three minute rounds.
Update: Miesha Tate has been paired with Maiju Kajula, while Carina Damm will battle Hitomi Akano.
