Fedor Emelianenko may be missing from Strikeforce’s January 29th fight card, but the promotion are still kicking off the year with an action packed event that will feature two title fights.
The event is due to air live on Showtime, and due to the fact there’s two title bouts there’s only four fights on the main televised portion of the card.
Fronting the show is welterweight title holder Nick Diaz. A fight with Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller had been rumored for some time, but with the two failing to agree on a weight limit that plan was scrapped and instead he will face Brazilian slugger Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos who gets the chance to fight for the belt after a successful 170lb debut earlier in the year against Marius Zaromskis.
Newly crowned middleweight champion ‘Jacare’ Souza also features as he attempts to make the first successful defence of his title against KO specialist Robbie Lawler in what looks to be a classic strikers vs grappler match-up.
Roger Gracie, the brightest MMA star of the current crop of Gracie fighters returns to the cage in January for his toughest challenge to date against the South African veteran Trevor Prangley. It’s a good test for Gracie and should give us an indication of where he stands at this stage in his career at 205lbs.
Finally the card is rounded off by a fight between NFL legend Herschel Walker and Scott Carson which had originally been planned for Strikeforce’s final event of 2010 earlier this month. An injury to the 48 year-old Walker forced him to pull out on that occasion, but he’s now back to full fitness and ready to take the next step in his fledgling MMA career.
