April 9th was originally set to be the date for the second set of quarter-finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight GP, but after that event was delayed until June, the promotion have instead put together an entirely different fight card which features another two highly significant title fights.
Headlining the card is a stellar welterweight title fight between two notorious ‘bad boys’ of the sport, current dominant champion Nick Diaz and the promotion’s deadliest striker at 170lbs, Paul Daley.
On paper Diaz has a definitive advantage if the fight hits the mat, but he’s shown time and time again that he loves to stand and trade, and if that proves to be the case against a KO specialist like Daley then fireworks are guaranteed.
In the co-main event slot the lightweight title is on the line as Gilbert Melendez aims to prove that his 2006 win in PRIDE over Tatsuya Kawajiri was no fluke.
Further down the card the quality match-ups continue with Gegard Mousasi Vs Mike Kyle, a light-heavyweight bout with potential title implications for Mousasi in particular if he can emerge victorious.
Finally Japanese favorite Shinya Aoki will return to the Strikeforce cage to take on a product of the Challengers series, Lyle Beerbohm, who’s recent defeat to Pat Healy shouldn’t disguise the fact that he had won his previous 15 fights in a row.
