UFC 112: Invincible, which sees the promotion heading to Abu Dhabi for an historic open-air event, is starting to be pieced together with four bouts officially announced for the main card, with a further two set for the prelims.
After an injury forced Vitor Belfort out of his anticipated middleweight title fight with Anderson Silva, fellow Brazilian Demian Maia now steps in as his replacement for the headline bout on the card.
Maia bounced back from the first defeat of his career, a 23 second KO loss to Nate Marquardt at UFC 102, with a decision victory over Dan Miller recently at UFC 109, taking his career record to 12-1.
Anderson Silva is of course on a record breaking 10 fight unbeaten run in the UFC, but he hasn’t defended his title since an uneventful win over Thales Leites almost a year ago at UFC 97.
The co-main event sees another belt on the line as BJ Penn seeks to defend his lightweight belt for the fourth time.
On this occasion his opponent his Frankie Edgar who is on a three fight win streak after losing for the first time in his 12 fight career against Gray Maynard back in April of 2008.
Elsewhere on the main card former welterweight champion Matt Hughes steps back into the octagon to face another member of the famous Gracie dynasty- Renzo Gracie.
Hughes beat UFC hall of famer Royce Gracie back at UFC 60, meaning that Renzo will be out for revenge for his family in this bout.
Currently on a four fight win streak in the promotion, the promising British fighter Terry Etim (14-2) finally gets an opportunity to show what he can do on the main card against Rafael Dos Anjos (13-4), who has tasted victory in his past two visits to the octagon.
It’s worth noting that this will be Etim’s first fight on the main card of a UFC event despite having seven previous fights with the company since April of 2007.
Also on the main card is a middleweight bout between TUF season 3 winner Kendall Grove and Mark Munoz.
The preliminary bouts so far announced for this card see two three UK fighters back in action as Paul Taylor takes on John Gunderson, Nick Osipczak faces Rick Story and Paul Kelly scraps with Matt Veach.
Highly touted light-heavyweight prospect Phil Davis has also now been confirmed for a prelim bout with Alexander Gustafsson.
More bouts are expected to be announced for this event in the coming weeks so check back for the latest updates.
