The UFC today officially announced their first event of 2011, UFC 125 which will air live from Las Vegas on New Years Day.

The event will play host to the lightweight division’s next title fight as Frankie Edgar aims to defend his belt for a second time and gain revenge over the only man to defeat him, Gray Maynard.

The heavy-hitting Chris Leben also returns to action after rejuvenating his career with back-to-back wins in the space of two weeks, defeating Aaron Simpson and Yoshihiro Akiyama at the TUF 11 Finale and UFC 116 respectively.  Now he takes on All-American hero and former WEC champ Brian Stann who is also hoping to reinvigorate his career at 185lbs.

All-action lightweight fighters Clay Guida and Takanori Gomi are also set to do battle in the octagon at the event, with Guida looking to extend his winning run to three fights while Gomi is aiming to build on his spectacular KO win against Tyson Griffin earlier in the year.

Nate Diaz has looked impressive since moving up to 170lbs, and a win over Dong Hyun Kim could propel him into the upper reaches of the division on January 1st.

Finally UFC 125’s main card will also feature an exciting light-heavyweight encounter as Brandon Vera and Thiago Silva look to rebound strongly from recent defeats and injuries to get back into the mix at 205lbs.

Former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown also features on the undercard against Diego Nunes while Marcus Davis looks to revive his career by dropping down to 155lbs to face Jeremy Stephens.
