August 27th is set to be another historic day for the UFC as they finally make their long awaited return to the birth-place of mixed martial arts – Brazil for UFC 134: Rio.
As you might expect the card is filled with Brazilian talent, starting with the main event which features arguably the countries biggest and best star Anderson Silva looking to defend his UFC title yet again and remain unbeaten in the promotion. The catch is that he’s facing Yushin Okami, the last man to defeat him, although that only occured due to Silva being DQ’d for an illegal upkick.
The co-main event also features another of Brazil’s biggest names as Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua looks to gain vengeance over another former 205lb champion Forrest Griffin who holds a 2007 submission win over him.
The parade of the great and good of Brazilian MMA continues with the legendary Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira making his return to action after an extremely long lay-off due to multiple knee and hip surgeries. He’s not been handed an easy opponent for his first fight back however as he’ll be taking on former TUF season 10 finalist Brendan Schaub who carries a four fight winning streak into this contest.
Sao Paulo native Luis Cane gets a chance to shine in the spotlight of the main card after getting back to winning ways earlier in the year with a swift TKO win over Eliot Marshall. Standing in his path this time is Bulgarian newcomer Stanislav Nedkov who holds an unblemished 11-0 record.
Finally the main card is rounded off with a lightweight bout featuring one of the most promising upcoming stars in the division Edson Barboza who’ll be taking on TUF season 9 winner Ross Pearson.
