We’re now into fight week for UFC 137 and after much upheaval to the original line-up which had been set to be headlined by a welterweight title bout between Georges St.Pierre and Nick Diaz, hopefully there won’t be any more last minute changes.
As things stand the event will now be headlined by a three-round battle between BJ Penn and former Strikeforce 170lb champ Nick Diaz. Both men would like the next shot at GSP’s title after Carlos Condit and a win here would certainly put either in a strong position to do so.
Due to the large number of changes to this event a heavyweight fight between Matt Mitrione and Cheick Kongo will now serve as the co-main event and certainly has the potential to be a fan-pleasing encounter between two of the division’s heavy hitters.
It’s not the only heavyweight attraction on the main card however as two veterans in desperate need of a win, Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic and Roy Nelson are also set to duel in a loser leaves town match-up.
Meanwhile former Sengoku featherweight champion Haitsu Haoki makes his debut against George Roop who’ll be hoping to add another notable name to his CV after recording wins over ‘The Korean Zombie’ and Josh Grispi in the past 12 months.
Finally, rounding off the main card is a fight that’s been promoted from the preliminary card which pits former bantamweight champ Scott Jorgensen against the returning Jeff Curran who’s last Octagon appearance came all the way back at UFC 46 in January of 2004.
Elsewhere the pick of the preliminary card is undoubtedly a meaningful lightweight clash between Germany’s Dennis Siver and former WEC favorite Donald Cerrone, either of whom could enter into the title frame in 2012 if they can come out on top in this potential ‘Fight Of The Night’ clash.
