We’re not going to lie to you, when this weekend’s UFC 138 fight card was first announced it looked like being the weakest of the year on paper, and injuries have only served to increase that feeling.
Nevertheless, when it comes to MMA you can’t always judge a book by it’s cover, and the best thing is that it airs for free on Saturday night.
Headlining the show is a fight between two of the middleweight division’s most ntoable contenders Chris Leben and Mark Munoz.
The fight will also have the distinction of being the first five round non-title fight in UFC history – something that’s going to become standard for the UFC from this point forward for main event bouts.
UK bantamweight fighter Brad Pickett gets the honor of co-main eventing UFC 138 in his debut against Renan Barao.
Both Pickett and Barao are potential title contenders at 135lbs thanks to their respective 3-1 and 3-0 records in the WEC so a win here iis vital to keep thier momentum going now that they are on the sports biggest stage.
Thiago Alves is a name that still holds weight, but after just one win in his last four bouts he now has to make do with welcoming newcomer Papy Abedi to the UFC on Saturday night.
One of the UK’s most promising fighters Terry Etim finally returns to action after a series of injuries kept him out of the cage for over a year, and he’ll square off against the still-green Brazilian Edward Faaloloto who’s just 2-2 in his MMA career.
Last minute injury problems have left the UFC pulling up a preliminary clash between heavyweight fighters Cyrille Diabate and Anthony Perosh to fill out of the main card.
