Though the last month or so has been extremely busy for the UFC they’ve still managed to compile an impressive looking fight card for Saturday night’s UFC 139 event in San Jose.
The event will be headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between two former PRIDE stars in Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and Dan Henderson who are both hoping to home in on another title shot at 205lbs.
Shogun was manhandled by current champ Jon Jones earlier in the year, but that came after a long injury layoff and with a quick win over Forrest Griffin at UFC: Rio in August under his belt he could build a case for a second showdown with the young star if he can dispose of Henderson.
As for ‘Hendo’, he returns to the UFC on a high after having become the light-heavyweight champion over at Strikeforce while also notching up a KO win over Fedor Emelianenko in his last fight. In fact his last three bouts have all ended in that fashion, and a similar result on Saturday night could open up options to either challenge Jones, or even Anderson Silva at 185lbs for a UFC title.
Taking the co-main event slot on the card is an intriguing striking battle between Brazilian legend Wanderlei Silva and Vietnamese San Shou expert turned movie star Cung Le.
For Silva this could be the last-chance saloon after winning just one of his last four bouts in the UFC, including a 27 second KO defeat to Chris Leben in July.
Meanwhile former Strikeforce middleweight champion Le will finally fulfill a long-time ambition to fight in the UFC at the age of 39 and his crowd-pleasing array of eye-catching yet deadly kicks will provide an interesting contrast to Silva’s less-refined but still lethal brawling style.
Providing strength in dpeth, the main card will also feature what’s expected to be a No.1 contenders bout at 135lbs as former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber takes on former WEC bantamweight champ Brian Bowles, with each having unfinished business with current title holder Dominick Cruz.
Two welterweight fighters aiming to get back into the title picture are Rick Story and Martin Kampmann, and one will make a solid step towards that with a win in this competitive match-up.
Finally, the main card is rounded off with TUF veteran Stephan Bonnar who’ll be looking to add to his current two-fight unbeaten run against Kyle Kingsbury who’s quietly notched up a four-fight winning streak of his own at 205lbs.
Don’t miss the prelims on this card, which can be caught on a mixture of Spike TV and Facebook, as there’s some good talent on show including a notable light-heavyweight scrap between Ryan Bader and Jason Brilz, alongside others such as up and coming prospect Michael McDonald and WEC vet Miguel Torres.
