With less than an hour to go before the main card begins live UFC 122 has been dealt a major blow with the news that co-main event star Alessio Sakara has had to pull out of his fight with Jorge Rivera due to illness.
The news comes from MMAJunkie who are at the scene. At this stage it’s not known exactly what his illness is, but it has been confirmed that the fight has been scrapped, leaving the main card with only four bouts.
With the card already receiving some criticism for a lack of star power, the removal of the bout many people had earmarked as a potential ‘Fight Of The Night’ candidate is far from ideal.
The good news for the UFC is that this is not a PPV event, and due to the fact that it’s not airing live in the U.S they will be able to substitute a preliminary bout to fill up the alloted timeslot on Spike TV.
Update: Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig Vs Nick Osipczak has now been promoted from the prelims to the main card. Under the circumstances that’s a solid replacement.
