Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem was cage-side to watch Fedor Emelianenko’s submission defeat by Fabricio Werdum and MMAWeekly.com were on hand to capture his immediate reaction to the upset.
“I didn’t expect it,” a disappointed Overeem said. “Nonetheless, props to Werdum. I’m sure he trained really hard for it and he looked really sharp. All I can say is that I’m really looking forward to fighting next.”
Overeem has already been beaten himself by Werdum in the opening match of an open weight tournament in Pride back in 2006, but he expects a different outcome in their second encounter.
“I’m gonna win,” he states confidently. “No question about it. I trained really hard and I’m gonna win – show the world I’m the champion, I’m the best fighter in the world.”
