On the heavyweight horizon looms a blockbuster clash of the titans as former Strikeforce and K-1 champ Alistair Overeem finally makes his UFC debut against the biggest draw in the business, former UFC title holder Brock Lesnar.
Though the match-up doesn’t take place until December 30th at UFC 141 the talking has already begun regarding who will emerge victorious on the night, and opinions are split.
Overeem himself admits that Lesnar has to be respected, but he doesn’t appear to be overly concerned about the prospect of facing him.
“He’s a strong guy, he’s a very dangerous guy, but I think I’ve got what it takes to stop him,” Overeem tells mixfight.nl.
In fact he believes he’ll finish him sooner rather than later.
“I’m very confident in a knockout victory – first round. He’s not gonna get out of the first round. It will not come to the second round.”
Not everyone’s quite so certain of the Dutch striker getting the better of Lesnar though. Former champion Frank Mir is in a better position to judge than most given that he’s fought Lesnar twice, going 1-1 in the process, and despite having a bitter rivalry with him he believes he will overwhelm Overeem.
“I think we’re going to see the closest thing to a grappler versus striker match you’ll see nowadays. Brock is going to cover up; maybe throw one jab. He’ll rush Overeem to the cage, reach down for a leg and rip him down,” Mir predicts in a separate interview with ESPN.com.
If that happens then Mir believes it’s game over for Overeem.
“I don’t think he’s going to get off his back. I’d be very shocked – I’d applaud Overeem if he got off his back.”
Overall, while there’s certainly much to admire about Overeem’s K-1 class striking and imposing presence, Mir states, “Honestly, I think Brock will win pretty easily.”
