A strong rumor stemming from Todd Duffee himself suggests that the former UFC heavyweight prospect could be set to face Strikeforce heavyweight champion and recent K-1 Grand Prix winner Alistair Overeem on December 31st’s Dynamite!! 2010 event in Japan.
So far it’s only been confirmed that Overeem will indeed fight on the card, but officially there’s no mention of his opponent at this stage. Duffee however posted a message on his Facebook page yesterday indicating that he was set to face him.
“Have no plans on NYE?! Dream Dynamite 2010: Todd Duffee Vs Alistair Overeem on HDNet,” Duffee wrote, though it should be noted that he later took down the message.
According to Sherdog a source close to the deal suggested that it currently had a “50-50” chance of taking place.
If it does occur it would certainly be a major boost to the card and would be a must-see bout for many fans.
Overeem is of course seen as one of the premier heavyweight fighters outside of the UFC at this moment in time thanks to a three year unbeaten run in MMA competition, holding the Strikeforce title and recently conquering the K-1 World GP title as well.
Meanwhile Duffee is seen as one of the most promising rising talents in the game despite an unexpected KO loss in a fight he was clearly winning in the UFC earlier this year. ‘Attitude problems,’ led him to be dismissed from the UFC in September, but a win in a high profile fight like this would be the perfect way for him to end the year on a high and let everyone know that he is still the real deal.
We’ll have to wait and see what comes of this though. It’s a risky fight for Duffee coming off a loss, and DREAM have had a tendency to hype up big fights for Overeem in the past and then end up putting him in with lesser quality fighters.
Needless to say we’ll keep you updated on this situation as it develops.
