What’s evident, even during the walk-ins for this fight, is that there’s a huge size difference between the two fighters, even taking into consideration the fact that Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson came in 6lbs weight overweight.
From the opening bell Johnson is finding a home for his heavy hands and Yoshiyuki Yoshida’s strategy to quickly move in for the clinch is being foiled due to the 8″ reach advantage Johnson enjoys keeping him at bay.
Even at this early stage it’s clear that it’s only a matter of time – 41 seconds to be exact, before Johnson lands the decisive blow that drops Yoshida and ends the contest.
There’s no question that Johnson is as powerful a striker as exists in the welterweight division at this time, but if he can’t guarantee that he’ll make weight in the future then he’ll have to take his chances at 185lbs.
In the mean time, after being punished for coming in overweight by having to hand over part of his purse for the bout to Yoshida, there is another blow in store for Johnson when Dana White reveals he would have won the ‘Knockout Of The Night’ bonus of $60,000 had it not been for his indiscretion.
Final Result: Anthony Johnson defeats Yoshiyuki Yoshida by TKO (strikes) in Round 1.
