Emanuel Newton retained his light-heavyweight title at Bellator 130 last night with a submission finish early in the fifth round of his encounter with Linton Vassell.
Both men had their moments in the fight, with Vassell appearing to get the better of the first two rounds, before Newton rallied in the third and fourth. That left all to play for in the final five minutes and it was Newton who seized the moment, taking Vassell down and getting his back before sinking in the fight-ending rear-naked choke.
Bobby Lashley was back in action in the co-main event and earned another stoppage victory, taking advantage of a miscue on a judo throw from Karl Etherington, falling to the mat in the process. Lashley followed him to the mat and started landing big blows as Etherington lay flat on his stomach protecting his head and making no attempt to improve his position. The ref looked poised to stop it, but before he could do so Etherington tapped out.
Making her Bellator debut in the first woman’s bout in quite some time in the promotion, former Strikeforce champ Marloes Coenen was in the hunt for submissions repeatedly against Annalisa Bucci before finally securing the rear-naked choke 57 seconds into the third round.
Opening up the main card, Dave Jansen earned himself a unanimous decision(29-28, 30-27 x2) win over Rick Hawn after feeding him a steady diet of kicks throughout the 15 minute encounter.
