Bellator got their fifth season underway on Saturday night, their second to air live on MTV2.

The show, which featured the opening round of their latest welterweight tournament drew an average of 235,000 viewers which equates to their fourth highest ratings on the station to date, though still some way behind the record 325,000 who tuned in for Bellator 44 earlier in the year.

Remarkably, despite featuring far less big-name stars than the Strikeforce: Barnett Vs Kharitonov event which also aired on Showtime at the same time they only had 44,000 less viewers.

With Strikeforce appearing to be on it’s last legs Bellator could soon be set to become the scond biggest promotion in the sport, and rumor has it that as early as 2012, or 2013 at the latest they could be en-route to Spike TV, filling in the void left by the UFC’s move to FOX.
