Bellator 59 turned out to be an eventful card one way or another. Unfortunately though the main event which was supposed to show the conclusion of the heavyweight tournament was quickly deemed a no-contest after Thiago Santos accidently kicked Eric Prindle in the groin and he couldn’t recover in the five minute period that followed.
UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino made his Bellator debut, but it didn’t go according to plan as Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire TKO’d him in just 50 seconds after hurting him on the feet with a left hook and then aggressively going for the finish before the fight was stopped somewhat prematurely by the referee.
There was a strong case to be made for the fight being stopped too quickly, but nevertheless Pellegrino took the the quick defeat to heart and announced afterwards that he was retiring from the sport.
In the bantamweight tournament final Eduardo Dantos got the better of Alexis Vila over three rounds to earn the $100,000 prize money and claim a title fight against current champ Zach Makovsy.
In the main card opener former UFC fighter Phillipe Nover was in action in a competitive fight with Marcin Held that went the distance, with Held winning via split decision though it could just as easily have gone the otherway.
