Since rumors first emerged that the UFC were ready to jump ship at the end of their current deal with Spike TV in December there’s been plenty of speculation about the possibility of Bellator Fighting Championships stepping in to replace them, and it seems there was at least a grain of truth to it.

Today Bellator announced that from the upcoming Season five onwards their weekly preliminary fights will stream live on Spike TV’s website.

The promotions main cards will still be broadcast on MTV2 however.

“We are thrilled to join forces with Spike.com,” Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “The Spike brand is synonymous with mixed martial arts worldwide and is another member of the MTV family, who does an incredible job in resonating with the hard-to-reach 18-to-34-year-old male audience.”

Spike TV are of course already familiar in dealing with preliminary content from major events having previously broadcast live fights from the UFC on a regular basis.

This will be the first time they have streamed fights live on their website though.  The deal will start on Saturday night when Bellator returns for it’s fifth season.

Bellator 49 Prelims:

  • Joel Roberts vs. Brylan Van Artsdalen
  • Giedrius Karavackas vs. LeVon Maynard
  • Alexandre “Popo” Bezerra vs. Scott Heckman
  • Lester Caslow vs. James “Binky” Jones
  • Azunna Anyanwu vs. J.A. Dudley

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of an uptake there is for this free content. If it proves successful it’s possible that it could prove to be the gateway for Bellator to find a permanent home on Spike TV at the end of the year when the UFC leaves for FOX.
