BJ Penn has taken to Twitter in an attempt to arrange his next fight, with former No.1 welterweight contender Jake Shields firmly in his sights.
“@jakeshieldsajj I would never challenge one of Cesar Gracie’s guys, but you’ve been calling me out for years.Let’s do it! I’ll contact Dana,” Penn told Shields after seeing that the former Strikeforce champion had agreed with a fan on the social networking site that a match-up with the Hawaiian would, “be a good fight.”
“I’m a BJ fan but let’s get it on. Make the call,” Shields replied.
Then Shields proceeded to up the ante a little.
“@bjpenndotcom even better, let’s make it the first 5 round non-title fight.”
That didn’t appear to put the former lightweight and welterweight champion off though.
“If that makes you feel more confident….. sure,” Penn agreed.
Of course this is all just talk until they get the greenlight from the UFC, but it’s a match-up that makes sense.
Penn is currently without an opponent after his rematch with Jon Fitch fell through due to injuries, and given the fact that Penn often has issues with getting motivated, the fact that he is the one actively pursuing the fight with Shields is a good sign.
As for Shields, he has indeed been looking to fight Penn for some time, and after a disappointing display against GSP last month, a win over ‘The Prodigy’ would be the perfect way to bounce back.
There were rumors last week that Penn was keen to compete at UFC: Rio in August, making that a potential landing spot for this fight if it does go ahead, though that card already looks fairly stacked and the UFC might be better served using this to boost one of their other upcoming fight cards.
