The controversial majority draw decision handed to BJ Penn and Jon Fitch this evening in their main event clash at UFC 127 now sets up the likelihood of an immediate rematch.

Interestingly that opens up the possibility that their second encounter could potentially be for the vacant welterweight title should current champion Georges St.Pierre defeat Jake Shields in April, and then move up to 185lbs to fight Anderson Silva as has been rumored recently.

If it all falls into place then it certainly makes sense, but what do the fighters themselves think?

At the post-fight press conference Fitch appeared to be in favor of it.

“I think that would be a great idea,” he stated. “I’d be down for that. I think it would be an epic fight.”

Penn seemed less sure of the idea.

“I can understand where Jon’s coming from, but I think I need one more win over Jon before I get a shot at a title,” was ‘The Prodigy’s opinion.

I think it actually solves a problem for the UFC. If GSP did win and then move up then it wasn’t immediately obvious who would go on to face the winner of tonight’s Penn Vs Fitch fight for the vacant belt.

As things stand a rematch would therefore appear to be the best solution.

Dana White was not at the post-fight press conference however, so it’s not known yet if the UFC themselves agree with that assessment.
