After a 21 second KO victory over Matt Hughes at UFC 123 event the question on many people’s lips was whether BJ Penn would be continuing to fight at welterweight or would be moving back down to lightweight.
At the post-fight press conference Penn said that for the first time in his career he would be leaving that decision up to UFC president Dana White.
At first White seemed a little taken aback by that, but appears he’s quickly become comfortable with the idea and has already got an opponent in mind.
“I already made the fight,” MMAFighting report White as saying to reporters after the press conference finished. “Him and Fitch in Sydney.”
BJ’s brother JD Penn then confirmed the news on BJPenn.com .
“Dana came into our locker room after the fight and offered us Jon Fitch at UFC 127. We immediately accepted the match and think it will be a good challenge and a step in the right direction for BJ.”
That means the fights will take place in Sydney, Australia with February 27th believed to be the date the UFC have in mind for the show.
Personally I think this sounds like an intriguing fight that could either propel Penn back into title contention at 170lbs, or give Fitch the springboard he needs to finally earn a second shot at the belt.
At the press conference White had also stated that George Sotiropoulos Vs Dennis Siver will also take place at the same event.
I must admit I’m less keen on that. White seemed quite high on the German after his win over Andre Winner at UFC 122 last weekend, but his two fight winning streak and 6-4 run in the promotion simply does not compare to the Aussie’s 7-0 UFC record.
At this stage Sotiropoulos should either be fighting for the title, or fighting the top contender in the division.
