When Jose Aldo pulled out of his co-main event featherweight title fight with Josh Grispi at UFC 125 it looked as if the UFC would need to put together an entirely new fight to fill the space, but instead it turns out that the perfect solution was already ready in waiting.
A quality light-heavyweight match-up between Brandon Vera Vs Thiago Silva had originally been scheduled to appear on the preliminary section of the card, to the surprise of many. Now the UFC have wisely chosen to elevate them to main card status.
It’s a move that appears to have met with fans approval so far. Though both fighters have lost two of their last three fights they are still respected and as such an impressive performance for either could offer them a chance to get back into the 205lb mix. Stylistically it also has the makings of a good match-up with both men comfortable trading on the feet.
The shuffle appears to have left a middleweight tilt between sluggers Chris Leben and Brian Stann taking over the co-main event duties.
Meanwhile the only real loser is Grispi. The talented 22 year-old went from making his UFC debut in a co-main event fighting for a title, to now being demoted to the undercard against the relatively unknown but still tough Dustin Porier.
UFC 125 takes place in Las Vegas on January 1st with a lightweight title fight between current champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard taking the top billing.
