Cain Velasquez Out For Six-Eight Months Due To Shoulder Injury

Bad news today for fans eagerly awaiting Cain Velasquez first title defense as the UFC’s light-heavyweight champion – it was revealed today that the fighter has suffered a shoulder injury which will keep him out of action for at least the first half of 2011.

A disappointed Dana White confirmed the news following today’s UFC 125 pre-fight press conference, stating that Velasquez torn rotator cuff could take between six to eight months to heal.

That leaves current heavyweight No.1 contender Junior Dos Santos in limbo waiting for his shot at the belt, a similar fate that befell Rashad Evans at light-heavyweight this year while he waited for Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua to return from surgery.

Dos Santos had already been waiting patiently for his shot since defeating Roy Nelson at UFC 117 in August. The Brazilian had recently stated his belief that the fight would take place in March or April. There had been some speculation that the bout may have been earmarked as one of the headline fights for UFC 129 in Toronto, Canada on April 30th, but that’s clearly no longer the case.

Instead it looks as if they are now set for a meeting in the summer of 2011.
