UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta became involved in an impromptu Q&A session with fans on Twitter last night, and one of the most interesting things to emerge from the discussion was that two former heavyweight champions are set to go toe-to-toe in the near future.
According to Fertitta Cain Velasquez’s first fight since losing his title to Junior Dos Santos at UFC on FOX 1 last year will come against Frank Mir who’s currently on a three-fight winning streak including a now infamous come-from-behind win against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in December.
While Fertitta didn’t say so it’s reasonable to assume that the winner of this bout will become the division’s No.1 contender and will face the winner of Dos Santos Vs Alistair Overeem for the title.
On that note, Fertitta also revealed that JDS Vs Overeem will take place on May 26th in Las Vegas which by my reckoning makes it the headliner for UFC 146.
Both of these bouts are well matched and should be eagerly anticipated, proving that there’s plenty of life in the division despite the fact that the sport’s biggest draw, Brock Lesnar, has now retired.
