You may remember a few weeks ago Chael Sonnen got into a bit of verbal sparring with Canadian presenter Michael Landsberg and then proceeded to walk off his ‘Off The Record’ show on TSN.
Well, believe it or not it appears the two have since made up and the outspoken star has returned for another interview in which he has some interesting things to say about what lies in store for him in 2012 – and it’s not what you might expect.
When asked about a potential rematch with current middleweight champion and long-time nemesis Anderson Silva who’s he’s invested considerable time and energy calling out in creative ways, Sonnen revealed that he’s now done a u-turn on the whole situation.
“I’m done with the guy. He and I have no business,” Sonnen told Landsberg. “He’s cold product. He’s like jheri curls and Pepsi Clear. He’s yesterday’s news. I destroyed this guy back when he was tough. That was years ago. He’s so far over the hill and so far past his prime that it’s not worth talking about.”
So who happens if Sonnen does defeat Mark Munoz at UFC On FOX 2 in January to qualify as the next title contender at 185lbs? It appears he’s thinking outside the box on that one.
“I’m going to become the No. 1 contender on January 28th and despite what you may think, I’m not going to use that voucher to fight Anderson Silva. I’ll be looking at (Jon) Jones, (Junior) dos Santos and possibly (Georges) St. Pierre. I will take that voucher to Dana White and pick one of those three guys. My time with Anderson is done.”
Of course realistically none of this is going to happen. A fight with heavyweight champion dos Santos isn’t even worth discussing while lightweight title holder Jones is taking four of five months off and depending on how things go is likely to face either Dan Henderson or Rashad Evans after that. Then there’s St.Pierre who’s going to be out injured for much of next year before perhaps taking on the winner of Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit.
So, despite his bold statements a fight with Silva is still Sonnen’s most likely target if he wants to get his hands on UFC gold in 2012. It’ll certainly get people talking though, and that’s probably just what he intended.
