Cheick Kongo produced one of the most jaw-dropping comebacks in UFC history last night as he survived being rocked multiple times by Pat Barry in the space of less than a minute in the opening round and then seconds later turned the tables completely by producing a knockout victory.
Afterwards Kongo talked to NBC Sports about the fight.
“It was pretty tough, you know?” he said, adding, “The good thing is I had a good chin.”
As for just how badly he was hurt, Kongo says he was down but not out.
“I was disconnected…you know, like the lift I was just going down and then up…but when he hit me I said, ‘Wow! What’s happened. I have to come back right away because I can’t let him be very confident [in] this position.'”
The spectacular end to the show had MMA fans in the stadium and around the world buzzing, and Kongo says that’s just what he needed at this stage in his career.
“My last [two] fights I made it with a lot of injuries and I was so bad. I have to come back right away with a huge performance so I’m pretty happy about this fight tonight.”
