Matt Serra Vs Chris Lytle was a rematch of the TUF season 4 finale in which Serra edged after a cagey performance from both fighters.
Four years later the two welterweights promised a more exciting fight in their second encounter and that’s just what they delivered.
This was a slug-fest from start to finish as the two took to the center of the cage and threw bombs at each other throughout.
Serra’s strategy seemed to be to throw to the body, but Lytle proved to be more effective targeting the face of Serra which became bloodier as the fight progressed.
The first round was relatively even, but by the second and third Lytle was clearly in the driving seat and landed some heavy blows to Serra’s chin at times, appearing to have him rocked, but he refused to go down and kept swinging regardless.
Unable to stop Serra inside the distance Lytle had to settle for a unanimous 30-27 victory on the scorecards.
With four wins under his belt and a string of solid performances Lytle surely now has to be taken more seriously than just a sure-fire bet for ‘Fight Of The Night’ bonuses.
As for Serra, he wanted a war and he certainly got one. With only one win in his last four fights perhaps a return to his BJJ roots may be an idea worth seriously considering for his next octagon outing .
