Costa Philippou got the better of Court McGee over three rounds this evening at UFC On FX 2 to hand the former TUF Season 11 winner the first loss of his UFC career.

The first round was fought entirely on the feet, but it wasn’t a barnburner. Philippou was getting the better of the action though, offering up more in the way of offensive output, snapping McGee’s head back on several occasions while also utilizing lateral movement to keep his opponent guessing.

McGee meanwhile appeared to be struggling to find his own rhythm and wasn’t letting his hands go, instead ducking in several times for takedowns without success.

The second round was more of the same as Philippou continued to do an excellent job of circling out of the way of McGee’s takedown attempts while also landing the harder punches more often in the striking department, leaving the TUF winner with a lot to do in the third round.

McGee did indeed step things up in the final round, coming forward with more urgency and mixing in head kicks and spinning elbows into his offensive arsenal, though he still wasn’t having any joy with his takedowns as Phillipou just appeared to be too strong and shrugged him off easily.

Meanwhile Phillipou was certainly slowing down a little in the striking department, perhaps being cautious knowing that he was more than likely two rounds ahead, but he was doing enough to stay competitive.

Onto the judges scorecards then and they see it clearly in Phillipou’s favor, 29-28 x3.

This was a nice win for Philippou that extends his winning streak to three fights, while McGee picks up his first loss in four Octagon outings.
