Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le has been campaigning to have the opportunity to fight for the UFC on the UFC 139 fight card in his hometown of San Jose for some time, and it appears that he’s finally been granted his wish.
He’s not been handed an easy fight for his UFC debut however, with Vitor Belfort believed to have been lined up as his opponent.
The unexpected news comes from Belfort’s own website who confirm that the fight is set to go down on November 19th.
For Le this is undoubtedly the biggest test of his 7-1 career, facing a fighter in Belfort who’s even more dangerous on his feet than he is. The Vietnamese fighter has an impressive resume of his own though, going 17-0 in kickboxing, and going on to win all seven of his MMA fights by either TKO or KO, defeating the likes of Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith along the way.
In the past few years Le’s own eye-catching and entertaining Sanshou fighting style has helped him break into the movie business leading to roles in films like Pandorum and Tekken, and that’s largely taken his attention away from his MMA career.
You have to give him credit though for not hanging up his gloves just yet despite his other endevours, and instead agreeing to such a potentially risky encounter.
As for Belfort, Dana White’s told him that he needs to rack up a number of wins if he wants to work his way back to a second fight with Anderson Silva, and so he’ll be hoping to build on his ‘Knockout Of The Night’ performance against Yoshihiro Akiyama when he faces Le.
This match-up certainly spices up the UFC 139 fight card which was recently weakened substantially when the heavyweight title fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos was moved to the ‘UFC On FOX 1’ show a week earlier.
It’s not clear yet exactly where Belfort Vs Le will fall on the line-up, but it certainly sounds a strong candidate for either main or co-main event status alongside the featherweight fight between Urijah Faber Vs Brian Bowles which could establish the next No.1 contender in the divison.
