It’s been a rough few days for UFC president Dana White as the Nate Marquardt situation blew up on Friday, resulting in him firing the long-serving fighter and scrambling to find a replacement main event for UFC Live 4 on just a day’s notice.
After the conclusion of the event on Sunday night White was all-smiles though after witnessing an action-packed night of fights on Versus that exceeded everyone’s expectations.
“I think this is one of the best cards we’ve ever, ever done. From top to bottom, great fights,” a glowing White told the assembled media at the post-fight press conference.
“It was a great night, the fights were awesome. These guys came in and delivered. You know, I say this all the time, we’re very lucky in the UFC we’ve got guys like Rick Story and [Charlie] Brenneman, all these guys that will step up when bad things happen, these guys will step up and put on a show like the show you saw tonight.
“From the first prelim to the main event they killed it tonight. It was awesome, and not to sound goofy or condescending of these guys, but I’m proud of them of all these guys that fought on this card tonight. I think this is one of the best cards we’ve ever had.”
White appeared to be particularly taken with the Story Vs Brenneman encounter, describing ‘The Spaniard’s’ victory as a “Rocky-like performance” while also taking time to praise Story, stating that he was “my kind of kid” and comparing him to Chuck Liddell for his desire to fight regardless of the opponent or the time-frame.
