One of the more intriguing rumors to emerge in the past month suggested that WEC featherweight champion and potential superstar Jose Aldo had been offered a fight in the UFC with Kenny Florian.
Florian later responded by saying he would love to fight Aldo, but that he had not received that offer which cast some doubt on the validity of the story.
Now UFC president Dana White has confirmed that the UFC did indeed make the Brazilian that offer.
“Here’s the thing, Jose Aldo’s been talking about moving up to 155lbs. Well, we had a slot and said, ‘alright, you want to move up to 155lbs and fight Kenny Florian?’ and he said, ‘uh, never mind,” White tells The Fight Fix.
So will they still be looking to move him into the UFC’s lightweight division in the coming year?
“I don’t, yeah, we’ll see. It depends on what this kid wants to do. If he wants to stay in the WEC and defend that title, that’s cool, but they were talking at one point about moving to [155lbs] so we talked to him and said, ‘how would you like to move to the UFC’s ’55lb division and take on Kenny, and they turned it down.”
During the interview White also confirmed that UFC star Jon Jones is still a few fights away from a title shot in the light-heavyweight division.
“In the fight business you work your way up the ranks. He just broke into the top 10, he’s going to take on Ryan Bader who just beat Nogueira. If he gets through that fight then he’s going to fight nothing but the top 5. So, Jon Jones is probably a year away from getting a title shot.”
