At a press conference today to promote UFC 124: GSP Vs Koscheck in December, Dana white spoke briefly about who the winner of that fight is likely to face next.
“If Jake Shields should win against Martin Kampmann, it will probably be him next,” White said.
Shields takes on the Dane at UFC 121 in just a couple of weeks time on the main card of UFC 121: Lesnar Vs Velasquez.
With that said cast your mind back to the week of UFC 117 back in early August as Jon Fitch prepared to take on Thiago Alves. At the pre-fight press conference White stated that the winner of that fight would get the title shot.
Fitch went on to win that fight, though admittedly in less than scintillating fashion via the judges scorecards (his eight fight in a row that’s ended with a decision), and suddenly White had a change of heart and said he wasn’t sure who would get the show.
In essence it appears that the UFC just don’t appear to like Fitch very much. Of course this isn’t major news – Fitch has only lost once in fourteen fights since joining the UFC five years ago, so being overlooked for title shots has become standard practice, but to have the chance offered and then taken away again must be a particularly bitter pill to swallow.
Ironically many fans believe Jake Shields is cut from the same cloth as Fitch, with roughly have his career wins coming by decision, including in his last two fights with Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller and Dan Henderson.
For the time being though it seems the grass is greener on the other side.
