Last night the UFC got their new ‘Ultimate Fighter: Live’ show underway on FX with two and a half hours of eliminator fights to whittle down the original 32 fighters to the 16 who’ll spend the next 13 weeks in the TUF house, and UFC president Dana White appears to be very happy with how it went.
“Going into this thing … you’re always nervous when you do something new and do something different,” White told MMAjunkie.com. “We worked long and hard on this show to make sure this came off with no hitches. I’m very happy to with how it came off. It was perfect. Everything went according to plan. There were literally no hiccups whatsoever.”
In a change to their usual format the TUF: Live show saw the fighters competing for just one five minute round, and any fears that this wasn’t enough time to give the competitors time to shine quickly evaporated as they rose to the occasion and produced multiple quick finishes via both knockout and submission throughout the course of the evening.
In White’s opinion that bodes well for the rest of the season.
“We’ve got a lot of guys who are very good, guys who are strong finishers. I love that. I love guys with killer instincts.”
Pre-fight the UFC president had told the fighters he would pay out $5,000 bonuses for every finish on last night’s show and that lead to him writing a total of $40,000 in cheque’s after the event.
As far as he’s concerned it was more than worth it, stating, “We had a damn good night of fights. It’s going to be a fun season.”
